The Route: Colombo to Udawalawe
Colombo → Southern Expressway (E01) → Mattala → Thanamalvila → Udawalawe
From Colombo we use the E01 southern expressway for the first 160 km, exiting at the Mattala interchange before heading inland through Thanamalvila. The expressway keeps door-to-park-gate time to around 4 hours even with a 2 AM pickup from your Colombo hotel or the airport.
Best Time to Travel
If you're doing a day trip out-and-back from Colombo, the morning safari is the only option that fits the daylight window. If you're willing to stay overnight near the park, the evening safari + morning safari combination gives the best wildlife experience.

About 200 km from CMB via the southern expressway. Plan for 4.5 hours door-to-gate including the Negombo-to-expressway transit.
Is it better to fly or drive from Colombo?
