Udawalawe National Park protects a 30,800-hectare mosaic of savanna, scrub forest and reservoir edge, and one of Asia's highest wild-elephant densities. Our private 4×4 jeep safaris put you inside the park at the exact hours elephants, buffalo and 200+ bird species are most active, with a licensed driver-guide who knows where this week's herds are moving.

Every package below is a private jeep (not a shared vehicle), covers hotel pickup from the Udawalawe area, and is led by a naturalist guide who can read tracks, identify birds on the wing, and time your visit to active waterholes. Compare durations and what's included, pick the slot that fits your trip, and request a private quote. We handle the park-gate paperwork.

What You'll See on a Udawalawe Safari

The wildlife that defines Udawalawe National Park.

Wild Asian Elephants

Around 600 wild elephants live inside Udawalawe, one of Asia's highest densities. Herds of 20–50 including mothers with calves are seen on virtually every safari, often within a few minutes of entering the park.

Water Buffalo & Spotted Deer

Large buffalo herds wallow near the Udawalawe Reservoir, while spotted deer (chital) graze the grasslands. Sambar and barking deer show up at dawn and dusk along the forest edge.

200+ Bird Species

Painted storks, grey-headed fish eagles, crested serpent eagles, changeable hawk-eagles, bee-eaters, rollers and malabar pied hornbills. Winter migrants (Oct–Mar) add waders and raptors, a serious birding destination.

Crocodiles & Reptiles

Mugger crocodiles sun along the reservoir, and monitor lizards, land monitors and Indian star tortoises are routinely encountered. Snakes are occasionally spotted basking on track edges.

Leopards & Sloth Bears

Both species are present but secretive, leopards are seen a handful of times per month, sloth bears even less. If a sighting is called on the radio, your guide will reposition immediately.

Smaller Mammals

Grey langurs, toque macaques, golden jackals, ruddy mongoose and palm civets. Early-morning drives are the best window for the shyer species before the heat builds up.

Best Time for a Udawalawe Safari

The park is open year-round. These are the windows that matter.

Dry Season: May to September

Peak wildlife viewing. With less water in the scrub, elephants and buffalo concentrate at the reservoir and waterholes, making sightings more predictable. Skies are clearer for photography. Our busiest months, book 3–5 days ahead.

Shoulder: October & April

Short rains green up the park and bird activity peaks. Migratory species arrive. Fewer vehicles at sightings, slightly softer light for photography. A great balance of wildlife and crowd levels.

Green Season: November to March

Birds are at their brightest breeding plumage and winter migrants are present. Elephant sightings remain excellent, Udawalawe's herd density doesn't drop with the rains. Morning safaris work best to avoid afternoon showers.

Time of Day

Wildlife is most active 6:00–9:30 AM and 3:30–6:00 PM. Midday drives are quieter because animals rest in shade. Full-day safaris cover both windows with a lunch break, the best pick for serious wildlife viewing.

Udawalawe Safari Tours FAQ

Everything travellers ask before they book.

Which Udawalawe safari tour should I book, full-day, half-day, or morning?

Morning (around 6:00–10:00 AM) and evening (2:30–6:30 PM) half-day safaris are the most popular. Wildlife activity peaks in cooler hours. A full-day safari covers both windows with a lunch break and is the best pick for serious photographers and birders who want every species in the park.

How much does a jeep safari in Udawalawe National Park cost?

Every safari is priced as a private quote rather than a per-seat ticket. Four inputs drive the final number: group size (1–6 in one jeep), time slot, pickup location, and season. Park entry tickets are paid separately at the gate and depend on nationality. Message us on WhatsApp with your date, group size, and pickup hotel and we reply with an itemised written quote within 60 minutes (9 AM – 9 PM Sri Lanka time).

Are hotel pickup and drop-off included?

Yes. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included from all Udawalawe-area hotels. We also arrange transfers from Ella, Mirissa, Tissamaharama/Yala, and Colombo. Those are priced as add-ons because of the longer drive. Tell us your hotel when you book and we confirm the exact pickup time.

What is included in the tour price?

Every package includes a private 4×4 jeep with a licensed driver-guide, bottled water, binoculars on request, and hotel pickup/drop-off. Park entry tickets and jeep-registration gate fees are paid at the park entrance. We handle the paperwork. Half-day and full-day tours also include refreshments; full-day adds a local lunch.

How long is a safari inside the park?

Morning and evening safaris spend roughly 3 to 3.5 hours inside the park; the listed tour duration (4–6 hours) includes hotel pickup, ticket queue, and drop-off. A full-day safari spends 7–8 hours inside the park across the morning and evening wildlife-activity windows.

Can I combine Udawalawe with Yala or the Elephant Transit Home?

Yes. The Elephant Transit Home (orphaned-calf feeding) is 10 minutes from the park gate. Easy to combine with a morning safari on the same day. Yala National Park is 2–2.5 hours away and best done as a separate day. Message us on WhatsApp for multi-park itineraries.

Is wildlife sighting guaranteed?

Udawalawe has one of the highest wild-elephant densities in Asia. Elephant sightings are effectively guaranteed year-round. Buffalo, spotted deer, crocodiles, and 200+ bird species are almost always seen. Leopards pass through but are rare. Our guides know the herd movements and active waterholes to maximise your encounters.

How do I book a safari and how early should I reserve?

Book via WhatsApp, the enquiry form, or by paying a deposit on any tour card. In low season a day's notice is fine; in peak months (July–September, December–January) reserve 3–5 days ahead to secure your preferred jeep and time slot.

Is the safari suitable for children and older travellers?

Yes. Our jeeps have padded seats and shade; the park roads are well maintained. Families with toddlers usually prefer the morning half-day (cooler, shorter). Travellers with back issues should mention it at booking. We pick a softer-suspension jeep and slower route.
